I’M OF TWO MINDS ABOUT LEGOLAS GREENLEAF OF THE MIRKWOOD FOREST AND HIS TENDENCY TO STATE THE GLARINGLY OBVIOUS i mean on the one hand obviously this speaks to formative years spent largely ignored by thranduil the aggressive partier ‘DAD’ cried baby legolas ‘I THINK THAT IF YOU KEEP DANCING SO CLOSE TO THE FIRE YOU ROBES MAY BE SET AFLAME AND THAT WORRIES ME’ but of course thrandy ignored him high as he was on [the general revelry/the majesty of nature/the good elvish drugs/his hatred of dwarves] and so eventually legolas learned to just cut his losses DAD YOU ARE ON FIRE so much simpler so much more likely to get an immediate reaction BUT ON THE OTHER HAND there’s the ‘kid they spoiled the shit out of you for reasons of your being the party king’s son’ theory in which legolas in his formative years received far too much praise for literally everything he ever said LOOK A BIRD said baby legolas and everyone cried WHY YES IT IS A BIRD YOU ARE SUCH A SMART LITTLE BABY ELF YES YOU ARE YES YOU ARE [i mean these are thrandy’s subjects you gotta assume they’re used to sucking up to the vapid blonde leadership] [at least one and probably dozens of these elves were there the day they turned back from erebor after all] [crying OH THRANDY WHAT A GOOD CHOICE IT WAS TO MAKE US COME ALL THE WAY HERE OUT ONLY TO TURN BACK WITHOUT HELPING BEST KING EVER!!] [so like. it’s not like offering up ridiculous unwarranted praise would be NEW or anything] but my point is in scenario two (aka the ‘spoiled princeling’ scenario) legolas grew up thinking that ALL OF HIS OBSERVATIONS WERE MOMENTS OF GENIUS and he’s 700 years old okay that’s a lot of time to be walking around thinking shit like ‘the sky is blue! i wonder if anyone ever noticed before. maybe they haven’t. perhaps i should alert someone!’ and now it’s too late for him he’ll be stating the obvious forever ‘a diversion!’ he says yeah genius we know.
